I could relate a lot to Rodriguez stories about growing up with foreign parents, as my mother is first generation from Korea. She also didn't go to college. She valued the opportunities that America offered greatly. She always pushed me to do well in school and I did very well. I was a straight A student and was in accelerated classes and received full ride scholarships to several schools. I didn't experience the desire to forget my past or home life, as Rodriguez did however, because my mom was so encouraging about school.

Wow! i'm really impressed that you have put so much importance on your education. I feel the same way, and I must say that out of al the essays we have read, this one by far was my favorite. I cannot identify with being of a different culture, but I identify completely at what education does to all of us that cherish it...we become aliens. We no longer are part of the veryday world to which everyone else belongs...we're alone. Not really alone because there are plenty of people like us, but we are alone from the ones we care about us and are closest to us.
